Chi Linh Trinh

This test piece is a series of faces that created a continuous circular pattern. Within the context of the current Covid -19 situation, this test piece does not only serve the purpose of being an experiment for the final project. When presented on its own, this represents my loneliness and how the lack of human interaction affected me as a person and an artist.

In my art practice, the human body and mentality have always been a constant theme. This manner of practice has been further investigated in the setting of a global pandemic. These faces were cast using silicone in a mold, then connected using glue. This work was made without any prior intention of a message, yet upon reviewing the collection of faces as an united figurative form, it gave the impression of this being my unconscious method of coping with limited interaction living on my own in isolation.

In this trying time, my loneliness has been dramatically magnified, as it is hard not to feel disconnected and neglected for human interaction. I find myself missing strangers’ faces with numerous expressions on the busy streets of Melbourne and how just being surrounded by other people has now become a luxury.

Continuous Recollection of Faces, silicone

Chi’s body of work primarily focuses on the human body, explored through her fascination as to how human emotions can be translated.

Her recent work Continuous Reflection of Faces (2020), specifically reflects on her own emotions during quarantine, in which due to the absence of human interactions, Chi has had to deal with not only the absence of friends and family, but being away from her home country; making her feel very alone, and disconnected to the world around her.

Through the use of silicone moulds and silicone, Chi has casted an assemblage of identical faces, showing her only constant company; herself.
