Maya Grkow

I am an emerging artist predominately working in sculpture and installation. I am drawn to works of art that is impulsive, experimental and messy. I am inspired by nature, the everyday life and fascinated by themes of transformation and naturalism. I love to work with everyday materials such as masking tape, paper and cardboard, as I am interested in the way these materials have underlying beauty, that is unseen by the common eye.

Floral (2020)  focuses on organic formations, that have been inspired by nature, by using simplistic and everyday materials, such as masking tape and paper, to transform them into something allusive, and what society considers beautiful. The process of creating these hollow shaped, circular patterns, which are connected together like a puzzle piece, represents the uncertainty of life.

As humans we try to plan out our lives by the second. But to know exactly what will happen in the next few minutes, let alone in three years, is a bit of an understatement, as no matter how hard we try to resolve the missing piece to the puzzle, life always has its way of turning itself upside down.

Maya’s work speaks to the delicate balance and repetition of form that links the different dimensions of nature. In this work, growing mycelium webs can be seen, a fungal form that then translates to the grey matter of the human brain, coral reefs and nest pockets ultimately reminding us of the fundamental laws of natural form.
