Stevan Lukic

In much of my work I try to pay as much attention to the process, as I do to the original idea. For me much of the outcome lies heavily on this notion. This idea of becoming. Through this action my work serves to investigate and to shine a light on contemporary culture through the lens of brightly coloured, comical and absurd sculpture. Much of the materials I use today are found objects, recycled pieces and repurposed household goods.

In this work I wanted to capture my own current state of being. I felt as if I was in this perpetual state of homeostasis, where the external world continued to crumble under the continual threat of what is currently known as COVID - 19. The work’s title, quoted from Henry Miller’s ‘Tropic of Cancer’ , refers to the author's own state of being whilst living in Paris; destitute, broke, resourceless. The work serves as a marker in history of how much things can shift within such a short period of time, with phrases such as debts and deficits, it questions what do we really value as a society.

I have no money, no resources and no hope. I am the happiest man alive, PVC, acrylic shag, textile, sequins, children’s toy, spray paint, liquid nails, lamp shade, used face mask

Steve’s work has a playful demeanour with a curios childlike sense of bold colour and shape use; juxta positioning large structural pieces, a jig saw of mathematical strands, circular edges and angles to make an equation of expressive and abstract-cubists forms of play.

Steve’s work has a consistent theme of colour in bright and bold pastel coloured hues, creating a magnetism of harmonic rhythm of visual information. The artists, entwines geometry with a mix of play, overall creating a child-like perception of an illusionary world for giants.

Other work of Steve’s addresses sexuality in a playful and symbolic light of objectivity and representation of sexual organs. There is a consistent theme of toy-like structures made for visual stimulation and a duality of conceptual confrontation towards innocence and sexuality.
