Lucy Wilde

My work is concerned with my personal experiences and interactions with the world, and any relevant commentary of the context of today. I was interested in making a work that directly juxtaposes the current climate of valid negativity and uncertainty within the world. To contrast this, I felt it was a logical approach to reconnect with my childhood memories and nostalgia as it was filled with fun activities for the sole purpose of simply having fun. In regards to this, I wanted to create a work that not only gave myself permission to have useless fun again, but to also give the audience an opportunity to reconnect with the simplicity of their own childhood and enjoy for the sake of enjoying. To express this, I used flour, water, and food colouring, to fill up six bags with home made, sticky play dough, which came out a lot more happily slimy than expected. I then built a stable chair base out of cardboard and covered it in this vibrant gooey substance, adding more as it oozed off. I used bright colours as a reference to the exuberant nature of childhood, and used the object of a chair to create a throne of fun, and through this, explored themes of playfulness, simple joys, and childhood nostalgia.

Lucy’s often surrealistic works depict a world often only imagined; by blurring the lines between reality and the imagination. Through her process’ of blending tactility and colour they invite the viewer on a truely immersive experience.
