I attempt to find the interaction between objects and shadow to strengthen the visual effect. I sometimes think an artwork would be monotonous without the participation of external factors. I intend to create open cubes and insert light source into the work, to include shadow as an important part of the work. Minimalism and surrealism are two theories that are important in my work and my practices often involves with open-shaped structure with irregular light sources.
In this project, I am interested in creating a visual effect that is hovering between the two-dimensional and three-dimensional. The aim of this work is to develop and practice theories of minimalism (the object) and surrealism (the shadow). I have chosen toothpicks as the material so the light source can go through the subject. The work is presented with multiple open cubes and glued on the wall, it is because I wanted to create an illusion that looks like the subject is floating, and also the shadow’s scale and shape are changing by the light distance. The artwork also uses geometrical line drawing constructed in a juxtaposition with light projecting.

Alex’s sculpture presents as a minimal yet highly complex structural form. Referencing cubist and minimalistic movements, His work draws you in to discover the point where the geometric shadows merge into the three dimensional, scaffold-like structure, mesmerizing the viewer.
